ftp_nlist — Gets an array of file names.


array ftp_nlist(, );
: FTP stream
: A directory


An array of file names on success or FALSE on error


This function sends a "NLST" command to the server, the user must have list directory permissions on the FTP server for this function to work..


This function may or may not return the directories as part of the list. It depends on the FTP server.

$ftpStream = ftp_connect("my.ftp.server");
$loginResult = ftp_login($ftpStream, "username", "password");
if ($loginResult) {
   $dir = "/pub";
   $files_array = ftp_nlist($ftpStream, $dir);
   print "Files in directory '$dir':<br>";
   // You can use foreach instead of while in PHP4
   while (list(, $this_file) = each ($files_array)) {
      echo "$this_file<br>\n";
