allow_url_fopen not supported

I found a provider that has allow_url_fopen turned off. What are the implications? Can I still use phpdig?

With allow_url_fopen set to on, websites in the form of scheme://... can be indexed. With allow_url_fopen set to off, then such indexing cannot occur.
