Only searching from start of word

Version 1.8.7

1. config.php set with SEARCH_DEFAULT_MODE to "any".
(i'm not sure what:
// in language pack make the appropriate changes to 'w_begin', 'w_whole', and 'w_part'
// 'w_begin' => 'and operator', 'w_whole' => 'exact phrase', 'w_part' => 'or operator'
is about. )

2. No search options set on search term.
3. searching for "shop".
4. known folder with name of "little_horror_shop".
5. no results.

Any suggestions?

I changed "any" => "", to "any" => "%", in search_function.php on line 91 to make it search for that word anywhere, rather than at the start. Seems to work great now. Was this off for a reason?
